Jeff Walker Und Die Flüffers: Welcome to carcass cuntry
13/08/09 || Khlysty
Oh, man, this is BROOTAL!!!! Even for Jeff Walker’s standards –and we’re talking here about the man who made anatomy a must for metal and whose vocal presence in Carcass almost defined death metal…-, this record goes beyond the limits of any logical expectation and moves into the realm of hallucinogenic-induced nightmare. Yep, lads, this is it: Jeff Walker and his gang of desperadoes invade the world of country music with the sole purpose of twisting it so much out of shape that when they end, it’s just a broken and misshapen carcass (yeah, haha, Carcass, geddit?…).
In all actuality, when I first listened to “Welcome To Carcass Cunrty” I was, like, “whaddafuck is this? C’mon, Jeff Walker goes country? NO FUCKIN’ WAY!!!”. But, well, that’s the truth: Jeff and his cohorts –Die Flüffers boast an incredible lineup, consisting of members of H.I.M. (!), Finnish grind faves To Separate the Flesh from the Bones and Jeff’s old buddies from Carcass and Napalm Death- go on and give their versions of old country classics. From Johnny Cash to John Denver and from Jerry Lee Lewis to Hank Williams, everybody and their grandmother go into Jeff’s extreme makeover… and they enjoy it, too!
See, for all the cries about “novelty act” and “joke band” and whatnot, these guys seem to sport a real affinity for the material they disembowel within this record. These are no joke interpretations of the songs, but real, lovingly rendered covers of songs that Jeff and the band seem to genuinely like. So, yeah, Walker’s gravely voice will never be mistaken for Kris Kristofferson’s or Neil Young’s, but good ol’ boy Jeff gives his everything when covering classic songs like “The Man Comes Around”, “Sunday mornin’ comin’ down”, or “I’m so lonesome I could cry”.
Of course, Die Flüffers being who they are, there’s a lot of grit added to the songs, a lot of distorted guitars, a lot of tha boyz’ ugly past and present; but, they don’t turn the songs into blastfests or anything like that. They just tweak them enough, so anyone can always be sure who’s behind this crazy-ass endeavor, without fucking with the core elements of the tracks. So, in the end, what we got here is eleven extremely enjoyable, tough-as-nails renditions of country songs (plus Neil Young’s “Keep On Rocking In the Free World” which is not country per se, but what the hell, right?), which will give you a great time, as the record has an almost guaranteed HUGE replay potential.
If you like good rocking music and if you CAN accept that Jeff Walker really wanted to do this, then, I suggest that you should accept this invitation to Carcass Cuntry. If not, well, as the gal on the back cover says, “Hey, fuck’em if they can’t take a joke!”.
